The EA Fisheries Team undertook their annual electro – fishing survey at Miller’s Dale last summer and the results provide evidence of continuing improvements in water quality and fish recruitment. Particularly pleasing was the relative abundance of juvenile fish in the 0+cm range. The full report can be viewed in our Fishing Statistics page.
Following the retirement of Paul Edgeley as President and John Shirtcliffe as Secretary, members at the AGM elected David Marriott as President of the Club for the next three years. In thanking the members for their confidence in him, the new President paid tribute to the hard work put in by Paul and John during their terms of office, a period which had seen a great transformation in the fortunes of the Club, not least of which had been the acquisition of the Monsal Dale water. Also elected were Dr John Smith, Don Stazicker and Bill Rogers, who took over as Secretary, River Conservancy Officer and Treasurer respectively. Paul Edgeley and Chris Pryor were co opted by the Committee to deal with Employment and Membership issues.
The Environment Agency has drawn attention to the improved water quality in the River Wye since the installation of the new sewage works at Buxton in 2004. This has led to an increase in fly life and invertebrates and a corresponding increase in the trout population. This is particularly evident in our water between Blackwell and Millers Dale where electro fishing has revealed astonishing numbers of wild trout. The full press release can be viewed at www.environment-agency.gov.uk in the media section under Midlands/Wildlife and Conservation.
